Dr. Young became an author in 2012 with the release of his first book in the “It’s a Crazy World… Learn From It” series.
Dr. S. L. Young earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree in International Business with a marketing focus from American University. He also graduated from The George Washington University with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Finance and Investments with a focus on organizational behavior and Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Project Management. Dr. Young’s doctoral studies and research on student engagement’s impact on academic performance for undergraduate nontraditional students were conducted at Marymount University.
Dr. Young’s professional career includes over fifteen years with Fortune 500 companies, including Bell Atlantic, MCI, Sprint Nextel, and various consulting engagements, in the areas of bid management, billing, customer service, engineering, finance, information technology, network security, operations, product development, program management, and software quality assurance.
Dr. Young teaches a variety of business courses (e.g., business communication, entrepreneurship, marketing, organizational behavior/development, principles of management, small business management) for over fifteen years at the Northern Virginia Community College and over three years at the Marymount University.
In 2012, Dr. Young created his non-profit organization “Saving Our Communities at Risk Through Educational Services (SOCARTES)" to provide educational services to individuals in opportunity “at-risk” communities. This nonprofit organization provides opportunities for him to give-back to the community.
Dr. Young’s passion to help others is based on his abilities to excel academically and professionally. For example, he overcame extreme educational challenges. In the tenth grade, Dr. Young was directed to leave high school after he failed 6 of 7 classes and missed over 1/3 of the school year. Nevertheless, he graduated high school in the bottom 8% of his class (280 of 303 students). Later, Dr. Young attended several colleges prior to actively becoming engaged in the process of learning. Also, in March 2014, he nearly ended his life due to the unexpected consequences of "taking a stand" against several workplace bullies in several organizations. Never could Dr. Young have expected that those choices would lead him to be effectively unemployed for many years, which led him to lose almost everything... including his life. These experiences drove Dr. Young's desires to tirelessly help others in meaningful ways and in various environments.
In January 2015, he launched his business "Beyond SPRH, LLC," which provides solution-oriented services to help individuals and organizations to maximize output potential.
Since nearly ending his life, Dr. Young has received the “Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Innovative Service Award” from the U.S. Department of Education, the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Trumpet Award” from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) of Prince George’s County, the “Distinguished Service Award” from Leadership Arlington, and recognition as volunteer of the month at a local detention facility. Additionally, he has taught over 700 students who happen to be incarcerated and spoken to hundreds of high school students about living life purposefully. This doesn't include being the commencement speaker at two high school graduations and a detention facility's General Education Diploma (GED) celebration.
Dr. Young is excited to share knowledge that leads to individual and collective growth, while also providing “authentic” lived-experiences to inspire others to overcome challenges to pursue their dreams, too.
Dr. Young’s motto is…
“It’s not about me, but the collective ‘we,’ and I’m trying to find the next me."
